Geography
If you were flying on a plane and happen to be looking down as you pass over Lake Tahoe, the sight of this clear and large flat surface of water might come as a surprise in an area dominated by towering mountain peaks. It was in 1944 that two European explorers stumbled upon Lake Tahoe, however impressed these two men might have felt at the largeness of Lake Tahoe, they did not know at the moment that what they had discovered would be known in the 21st century as the largest lake in all of North America.
The geography of Lake Tahoe is very interesting and it adds to the charm of this incredible national treasure. According to scientists, geographers and researchers, the present geography of Lake Tahoe was produced by the movements of the earth's crust. As these plates moved, faulting occurred causing some parts of the crust to rise up while others sank down. This, combined with the movement of glaziers and melting snow from the mountain that flowed to the basin of Lake Tahoe interacted together for a long span of time. Over a period of about 2 to 3 million years, the Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges and Lake Tahoe was formed.
Lake Tahoe is an incredibly large lake found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and this lake has caught the interest of many people from all over the world because of its sheer size and depth. With a maximum length of 35 kilometers, a maximum width of 19 kilometers and a surface area of 495 square kilometers, lake Tahoe is easily the largest lake in America. Its maximum depth is 501 miles which makes it the second deepest lake in the US next to the Crater Lake in Oregon.
The surrounding areas of Lake Tahoe are generally mountains, with Carson Range on the eastern side of the lake and Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges on the west. The area found at the south of Lake Tahoe is where most of the few square kilometers of flatlands near Lake Tahoe can be found. These flat areas with may streams leading to Lake Tahoe seemed suited for communities to be built and it is here that the current South Lake Tahoe City is situated.
Lake Tahoe is a vast lake found in the border of two US States. One third of this large lake is within the border of the State of Nevada while the remaining two thirds belongs to the State of California. If you imagine Lake Tahoe as a large, roughly oblong-shaped clock, then the hands of the clock would show the time of four o'clock, these hands signifying the border dividing the States of Nevada and California. Nevada would occupy the smaller space border by the hands pointing to twelve and four while California would be situated on the other side between four and twelve.
Some of the jet ski establishments in South Lake Tahoe include H2O Sports, Lakeview Sports, Birkholm's Water Ski School, Action Watersports, High Sierra Adventure Sports, Ski Run Boat Company, Eken Water Sports, and Tahoe Keys Boat and Charter Rental.
