Getting There
Because of the impressive natural surroundings and many recreational activities in South Lake Tahoe, the area has become a popular destination for tourists, entrepreneurs, vacationers and even honeymooners as early as the mid-1800s. This charming and rustic city is built at the southern banks of Lake Tahoe, the biggest lake in North America and a valued national treasure. Thousands of people come to South Lake Tahoe annually, and every year, more and more people want to come here themselves. The big question on many people's minds however, is how to get to South Lake Tahoe from wherever in the country or in the world they may be.
If you choose to get to South Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County, California by air, you would be pleased to know that there is a nearby airport that services commercial flights. It is located just a few kilometers away from the city and is called the Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Lake Tahoe lies on two states, one Reno, Nevada while the other is El Dorado County, California and these two distinct places have built an airport to service passengers headed to the beautiful Lake Tahoe. There is also the Tahoe Lake Airport situated at the south of South Lake Tahoe.
A smaller airport can also be found within the city of South Lake Tahoe, however, this small airport does not service large commercial planes but it does provide facilities and services for small helicopters and charter airplanes.
Passengers coming to and from the airport of Reno/Tahoe or from South Lake Tahoe's charter plane airport need not worry about transportation. There are plenty of taxi cubs and buses that can be found immediately outside there Lake Tahoe airports. There are also rental car companies found within and around the Reno/Tahoe International Airport for those who want to to rent cars for their stay in South Lake. There are also plenty of airport shuttle services and companies that provide efficient and affordable means of transportation to passengers headed to or from the Reno/Tahoe International Airport.
If you are not in that much or a hurry and would like to enjoy the beautiful natural sceneries of the area instead of just looking at them from thousands of feet on a plane, you can opt to get to South Lake Tahoe through train. There are three train stations you can go to, the California Station, the Truckee Station or the Nevada Station. There are also shuttle buses and taxis that you can find outside these train stations that can take you directly to your hotel or lodging accommodations in South Lake Tahoe.
If you have your own vehicle and would like to drive to South Lake Tahoe, the fastest highway to take would have to be Highway 50 and 89. South Lake Tahoe is about a hundred miles away from Sacramento, 198 from San Diego, 460 from Las Vegas and 470 from Los Angeles.
