Highway 50 Closed at Echo Summit [Update: Re-Opened!]

May 10th, 201111:57 am by

Highway 50 will be closed for approximately two weeks beginning Wednesday, May 11th. Caltrans will be replacing the old rock wall overlooking South Lake Tahoe with a modern barrier meeting today’s safety standards. For approximately six weeks after the closure, traffic will be down to one-lane Monday through noon on Fridays. Highway 50 will be open Memorial Day Weekend!

To get to South Lake Tahoe from Sacramento or Placerville while Highway 50 is closed, you can cut over to Highway 88 by taking Highway 16 from the Power Inn Road exit in Sacramento or the Missouri Flat Road exit in Placerville to Highway 49. From the South Bay and Southern California, you can take Highway 88 East from I-5 in Stockton. Once on Highway 88 East, take Highway 89 North to Tahoe. If you haven’t taken the drive before, it is a very beautiful and scenic drive well worth the added time.
